[ARCHIVED] Hampton schools post lowest dropout rate in the region; graduation rate also up

Oct. 8, 2019 - Hampton City Schools has the lowest dropout rate of the 15 school divisions in the region, according to data released by the Virginia Department of Education. The division also posted improved graduation rates.

Graduation rates are counted for students who earn their diploma in four years. Hampton's rate first surpassed the state average in 2017. For the Class of 2019, 92.73% of students graduated on time vs. the state average of 91.5%.

In addition to the overall rate, Hampton is above the state average for graduating students who have disabilities, who are economically disadvantaged, African Americans, Hispanics, and those who speak English as a second language. 

Hampton City Schools' dropout rate of 1.26% is the lowest dropout rate of the 15 school divisions in the region. And it's lower than 121 of the 131 school divisions in the state. 

The release of graduation and dropout rates follows the recent release of school accreditation data. All of the schools in Hampton earned accreditation with no conditions for the first time.
