[ARCHIVED] VDOT to begin work to Magruder Blvd. bridge at Hampton-York border

Bridge repair map

Oct. 14 - Work to replace the northbound bridge on Magruder Boulevard at the Hampton-York County line begins this week, VDOT announced. During construction, some lanes will be closed. Magruder Boulevard is Route 134 and becomes Hampton Highway in York County.)

This week, crews will close the right lane going southbound on the southbound bridge to pave and temporarily widen the lanes. When that is completed, expected in the early spring, the northbound bridge will be closed for demolition. At that time, northbound traffic will be shifted left to the remaining southbound bridge. For about a year, north- and southbound traffic will each have one lane on the southbound span.

When that traffic shift occurs, Old Armistead Avenue at Magruder will also be closed. Access will be maintained for local businesses and residences, VDOT says.

The waterway the bridge spans is called Brick Kiln Creek, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It also has been listed on maps as Northwest Branch of the Back River and Wythe Creek.

The project is expected to be completed in spring 2021. When complete, the new bridge will have new approaches and wider shoulders.
