Oct. 24, 2019 -- This afternoon and evening, Hampton will join as America celebrates Lights On Afterschool.  The national event supports the afterschool programs that keep kids safe and inspire them to learn.

To show community support, landmarks and buildings across the country will be lit in blue and yellow – from New York’s Empire State Building to Hampton’s City Hall, Hampton Roads Convention Center and Virginia Air and Space Center. The city’s Healthy Families department runs afterschool programs in many schools, and community centers offer programming as well.

Hampton City Schools has ten school sites participating – Aberdeen Elementary School, Bryan Elementary School, Cary Elementary School, Kraft Elementary School, Machen Elementary School, Smith Elementary School, Lindsay Middle School, Syms Middle School, Tarrant Middle School, and Andrews PreK-8 School. Each school has invited their families and community members to participate in a variety of afterschool activities spotlighting the importance of afterschool programs.

They will be part of a million people nationally who will attend more than 8,000 open houses, science fairs, showcases, academic contests, community service activities, sports competitions, and other events across the country.

Organized by the Afterschool Alliance, Lights On Afterschool is America's only national rally for afterschool programs.
