[ARCHIVED] Fire station 7 temporarily closed; firefighters will work out of neighboring stations

Hampton Fire Department Logo

Jan. 13, 2020 - While preparing Fire Station 7 for new carpet last Thursday the city discovered that old floor tiles in the station might contain asbestos. All work in the station was halted and fire officials took firefighters out of the station while the tiles and the air quality was tested. Fire station 7 has been temporarily closed. It was built in 1967 and is located at 176 Fox Hill Road in Hampton.

the air quality at the station is OK,  the floor tiles in the fire station do contain asbestos. A licensed contractor will abate the issues that were discovered. Fire officials are still waiting for an official timeline, but remediation should take at least a few days, if not a week or so.

In the meantime,  firefighters from station 7 (there are five people on duty at all times) are being housed at stations 5,  located at 416 Beach Road in Fox Hill, and station 4, located at 2412 East Pembroke Avenue in Buckroe. The temporary closure of station 7 should not affect the fire department’s ability to protect the neighboring community.
