Day of Remembrance and Hope will honor those killed on 9/11

Remembrance and Hope-nf

Aug. 24, 2020 — Members of the military, first responders, community leaders, veterans and residents will gather on Friday, Sept. 11, 2020, to honor those lost in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

The city’s Military Affairs Committee hosts the annual event at Gosnold’s Hope Park. In past ceremonies, "Trees of Hope" have been planted in honor of those killed the attacks and those who died in the rescue efforts. The trees were planted with the "Soils of Justice," comprised of soils from the three sites of the terrorist attacks -- the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon crash site in Arlington and the crash site of United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania.

The names of the thousands of people who died will be read aloud, an annual tradition.

Former City Councilwoman Angela Lee Leary was instrumental in beginning and maintaining the annual event.
