Jan. 11, 2021 - Huntington Ingalls Industries announced Monday that it has completed the first phase of a new Unmanned Systems Center of Excellence in Hampton. The 22,000 square-foot facility is the first of two planned buildings. It will be used to assemble hull structures for unmanned, undersea vehicles for the U.S. Navy. Andy Green, executive vice president of HII and president of the company's Technical Solutions Division, said they are "thrilled to reach this critical milestone."

Development of the main facility, a 135,000 square-foot building, is to be completed by the end of 2021. The company said it will be used for "unmanned systems prototyping, production, and testing." More than 250 high-quality jobs will be created to support unmanned systems design and production at the facility. Employees began working in the first building on Dec. 28, 2020.
