Children Portray Historical Figures in “Virtual Living Black Wax Museum 2021,” with an emphasis on African American firsts

"The Living Black Wax Museum," returns virtually! In partnership with the Hampton History Museum, the Hampton Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated presents a video exhibit of notable figures in African American history portrayed by children.   In light of Covid- 19 concerns, this popular community event will air in video format on the Hampton History Museum’s Facebook page and YouTube playlist at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday March 27th.

DID you know that the stoplight was invented by an African American scientist by the name of Garrett A. Morgan?   Or that Charlotta Bass was the 1st African American woman to run for national political office in the United States?  Join us at this historical event to learn about these and many other notable figures in history!  According to chapter Program Director, Rebecca Wheeler Walston, “We look forward to highlighting the valuable contributions of the African American community to American life in the fields of sports, entertainment, science, and art.”

Through dramatic presentations, children ranging in age from preschool to high school will celebrate “African American firsts."  Meet Luther Askins, the 1st African American to integrate the NBA, Mae Jameson, the 1st African American female astronaut, and many others!

Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated is the oldest and largest 501(c)(3) organization of mothers dedicated to raising the next generation of African American leaders, while enhancing the lives of all children. Established in 1938 in Philadelphia, members continue to work to accomplish their mission through diverse programs focused on leadership development, cultural exposure, community service, legislative advocacy and philanthropic giving.

After the event premieres on Facebook, it will be uploaded onto the museum's YouTube playlist and website www.hamptonhistorymusuem.org.
