[ARCHIVED] Governor comes to Hampton to introduce state coastal resiliency plan

Gov. Northam

Dec. 7, 2021 - Gov. Ralph Northam visited Hampton on Tuesday afternoon for a ceremony in which he introduced the inaugural Virginia Coastal Resilience Master Plan to address climate change and its effects on the commonwealth.

Hampton was chosen for the ceremony in part because of the city's work in preparing to deal with climate change.

Surrounded by staff and city officials, Northam praised the work that went into the state master plan but stressed that it was only a first step that “highlights the need for additional data and analysis based on what we don’t know and what we need to know.”

Marveling at the view of Hampton’s waterfront from the sixth floor of Old Point National Bank, Northam turned to Hampton Mayor Donnie Tuck and said: “Why have I never been invited up here before? I thought we were friends.”

Read the state's master plan, which was posted online as Gov. Northam spoke. You can find more about the Resilient Hampton plan here
