Aug. 30, 2022 — Hampton residents who have been negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic can receive free training in several different fields at Virginia Technical Academy, funded by a CARES Community Development Block Grant.

The deadline to apply for the free courses is Friday, Sept. 9, and the classes begin on Monday, Sept. 12. The grant can be applied to day courses (8 a.m.-4 p.m.) or night courses (5:30-9 p.m.).

The courses available include building maintenance, and Level I courses in plumbing, HVAC and electrical. Students who receive the grant can receive a free tool bag upon graduation if they maintain a B-average, a positive attitude and good attendance.

To qualify for the grant, applicants must show proof of Hampton residency and documentation of hardship due to the pandemic.

Virginia Technical Academy claims an employment rate of better than 99 percent for its students and has more than 100 affiliated businesses that hire graduates.

To inquire or to apply, call 757-586-5322 or visit the campus at 809 Omni Blvd. in Newport News.

The CARES Community Development Block Grant is a federal program designed to help communities deal with the economic impact of the pandemic.
