River Street Park closes Tuesday, as part of I-64 widening project

River Park long

Aug. 31, 2022 - Downtown's River Street Park will be closed beginning Tuesday, Sept. 6, as part of the widening of Interstate 64, which will connect to the expanded Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. The park is located at the intersection of River Street and Pembroke Avenue, on the Hampton River.

The interstate runs over the park, and the Virginia Department of Transportation will need access to the bridge/overpass above to build express lanes. For safety, no one can be there but the VDOT workers or contractors.

Major features of the park, including the kayak launch and history walk, will be disassembled and put into storage. There will be no public access of the site until at least 2024.

The park was designed in conjunction with the adjacent Pasture Point neighborhood.
