Sept. 23, 2022  — Neva White, a Virginia Beach native and Old Dominion University graduate, was hired in August as Hampton’s director of library services.

From 1996-2002, she worked at libraries in San Antonio and Fort Worth, Texas, receiving the Librarian of the Year award from the North Texas Regional Library Association.

In June 2002, she returned to her hometown to develop the Princess Anne Area Library, which was designed to become the prototype for public libraries in Virginia Beach. That branch included self-check circulation, more accessible reference service, and a larger staff that allowed for expanded programming and outreach services. While in Virginia Beach, she also worked extensively in the area of strategic planning and process improvement, most recently as the city's strategic innovation manager.

White said she was drawn to Hampton because of the city’s commitment to inclusion and diversity.

“Since moving to Hampton, I’ve discovered so many gems that I just wasn’t aware of when I lived in Virginia Beach,” White said. “I’ve discovered wonderful local restaurants, fabulous beaches and a wonderfully diverse community here.”
