Oct. 3 - A Nor'easter is hitting the Hampton Roads region and is expected to cause tidal flooding, particularly in Buckroe, Grandview, Newmarket Creek and other areas located on the water. With high tide anticipated at 3:52 p.m. today, the National Weather Service office in Wakefield has lowered its forecast slightly.

Flooding at Sewell's Point is now predicted to hit to 6.5 feet above mean lower low water, down from the earlier estimate of 6.9 feet. 

At noon, winds measured at Langley Air Force Base were about 25 mph, with gusts over 50 mph. 

The city has opened the George P. Phenix School as a shelter for residents affected by the storm and flooding. The facility, located at 1061 Big Bethel Road, is open to medical patients, general population and pets. It will be kept open as a shelter as necessary. Residents should bring any medications or special needs equipment; air mattresses, blankets and pillows; diapers, toys, games and books for children. Pets owners should bring a cage or crate, food and water, shot records and medications.

City offices and facilities, such as libraries and community centers, closed at noon on Monday. Schools were closed Monday. HRT buses are running regular routes, but service could be disrupted or changed due to flooding. Watch for closing updates. More updates will also be posted on the city's social media sites.

Trash pickups scheduled for  Monday will be conducted, but Tuesday's trash pickups have been postponed and will be done early Wednesday morning. The Public Works Department is asking residents not to put trash bins or yard debris at curbside until after the storm has passed. Trash cans can be overturned by winds, and yard debris can be washed into the sewer system and cause water to back up into the streets.
