[ARCHIVED] City to keep Fort Monroe Community Center pool open, expand hours

Hampton Community Centers-21

OCt. 12, 2022 - When the new Aquaplex facility opens, Hampton will continue to operate its indoor pool at the Fort Monroe Community Center, which may be more cost-effective for some residents, depending on usage. The current Aquatic Center – less than 3 miles from the new center – will be closed. That facility on Butler Farm Road is attached to the police training center, and its closure to the public will allow increased usage and security for the Hampton Police Division.

The Hampton Virginia Aquaplex will provide superior facilities for lap swims, learn-to-swim courses, and water exercise classes. By offering Hampton residents significant discounts on membership and day rates at the new Aquaplex, the city anticipates many people will choose that facility. However, the pool at Fort Monroe will remain open with expanded hours for people who prefer that option.

  • Hours at the Fort Monroe pool will expand from the current Tuesday and Thursday schedule to Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m. and Saturdays, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • Regular water aerobics classes will be scheduled for the Fort Monroe pool, with additional classes, programs, and special events to be scheduled seasonally.
  • Membership to Fort Monroe Community Center is $20 for adults and $15 for youth annually. Lap swims are $1.50 each for adults. Buying a punch pass for multiple visits drops that cost to less than $1 per visit; a monthly pass is $10. A punch pass for water fitness classes brings the cost to $2 each. There are additional discounts for seniors and young people.
  • Current membership at Hampton Aquatic Center is transferrable and honored at the Fort Monroe Pool.

The Fort Monroe Community Center also has a variety of “land-based” activities available for members, some of which come with activity fees, such as an active pickleball program, fitness room, ceramics studio, full gymnasium and multi-purpose rooms with caterer’s kitchen, a playground, game room, and seasonal pedal-boat and kayak rentals from the pier, plus leisure classes, summer camps, after-school programs, and special events.
