A newly approved manufacturing development on Shell Road is expected to generate 250 new jobs, with Hampton residents getting the first shot at applying for them.

At the City Council meeting on Wednesday night, national industrial developer NorthPoint was granted a rezoning of about 63 acres on the former site of the School for the Deaf, Blind, and Multi-Disabled. NorthPoint plans to spend $93 million to build two light industrial/warehouse buildings. The project is expected to provide about temporary 200 jobs during construction and then 250 permanent jobs when completed.

NorthPoint agreed to limit some of the types of light industrial uses, and provide sound barriers and landscaping that will screen the facility. The company will also reserve 5,600 square feet of the facility for a workforce training center and give Hampton residents a two-week head start on applying for jobs.

The city has retained 11 acres between the facility and the neighborhood behind it, and the neighboring community will have input on how that land will be used. NorthPoint has agreed to make a financial contribution to the reuse of that area.
