Hampton Public Library drops overdue fines, adds text communication

April 6, 2023 — Hampton’s libraries will no longer charge late fees for overdue books. They are also adding the ability to communicate with customers by text and email.

“This will eliminate a big barrier for families who sometimes are afraid to check items out for fear of not getting them in on time and incurring a fee,” said Library Director Neva White.

It’s also less likely you will have an overdue book, as the library will automatically renew your materials up to three times, as long as no one has a hold on the item. There is still a cost for damaged or lost materials.

The library has also improved their notification process to let customers know when their items are finally or when items on hold are ready for pickup. Patrons can now sign up to get texts or emails, which will streamline the process.
