[ARCHIVED] Gold Star Mother’s Day Tribute

On Sunday, September 28, 2014, the Survivor Outreach Services of the United States Army will hold a Gold Star Mother’s Day Tribute at the Regimental Memorial Chapel, 923 Lee Boulevard, Fort Eustis. The tribute will be held from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. between the regular Catholic and Protestant services and both congregations are invited to attend. It is also open to those who wish to attend the tribute only.

The name Gold Star is derived from the custom of military families who put a Service Flag in their window during times of war. The Service Flag displayed a star for each family member serving in the United States Armed Forces; blue stars to represent those serving and gold stars to honor those who had fallen in the line of duty. On June 23, 1936, the United States Congress designated the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mother’s Day to honor the mothers and their families who lost a family member while serving in the United States Armed Forces. In 2014, a Proclamation marking September 28th, 2014 as Gold Star Mother’s Day was signed by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. On this day, the citizens of Virginia are called to recognize the sacrifices that Gold Star Mothers have made when a son or daughter dies in service to the nation.
