    The city requires that property owners (landlords, rental agents, etc.) provide a working smoke alarm in each rental unit or property. If you live in a rental property that does not have a working smoke alarm, contact your landlord to make a formal request. If unable to reach an installation agreement with the landlord, contact the Fire Prevention Section at 757-727-1210. In order for Fire & Rescue personnel to install smoke alarms or check or install batteries you must be a city resident. A limited number of specialized smoke alarms for the hearing impaired are available upon request. We will make a courtesy call before coming out. We make every effort to meet the date and time you request, but emergency calls take precedence and your installation may have to be rescheduled.
