A Splash of the Arts

Saturday, July 9, 2022

Hampton City Schools, through Arts for Learning, the Virginia Affiliate of Young Audiences, and with the support of the Hampton History Museum and Downtown Hampton Development Partnership, is hosting free arts and entertainment on Saturdays in July. The program will include performances in music, art, theater, storytelling, dance, and more. The events will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and are free of charge.

Event Schedule:

  • 10 am-Oceans of Fun: The Rainbow Puppets introduce students to creatures in and around the ocean in this fast-paced musical revue that’s just perfect for summer fun.
  • 10 am-The Zen of 'Za/Art Snacks: In this interactive workshop, dancer Joppa Whitehead leads the audience in simple yoga-like stretches that mimic the lines of a pizza. Kids and adults will then create their own make-and-take decorative “pizza” out of supplied art materials.
  • 11 am-That’s Using Your Noodle: Storyteller Via Goode will delight the audience with “brains over brawn” folktales from around the world that feature unlikely heroes who use their wit and imagination to overcome obstacles.
  • 12 pm-Become Your Dreams: With incredible energy and personalities to match, the dancers of Illstyle & Peace Productions trace hip hop dance styles from the late 1970s through today, teaching positive messages in an interactive show where the audience will get to share their own creative dance moves.
  • 1 pm-Theater Games: In this interactive workshop, Katherine Willet shows the audience how theater techniques and context clues can help actors create strong, unforgettable characters.
  • 1 pm-Come Freedom, Come: Storyteller and actor Valerie Davis brings to life the uniquely American story of Martha Ann Fields, an enslaved cook and one of Virginia’s unsung heroes in this powerful program of freedom and empowerment.
  • 2 pm-I Can Do It: Magician Harold Wood juggles and demonstrates sleight-of-hand tricks in this crowd-pleasing show that teaches about self-esteem and self-reliance—and features a surprise guest. Hint, he loves carrots!
  • 3 pm-Become Your Dreams: With incredible energy and personalities to match, the dancers of Illstyle & Peace Productions trace hip hop dance styles from the late 1970s through today, teaching positive messages in an interactive show where the audience will get to share their own creative dance moves.
