  1. Small Works

    While much of the most famous works of art catch our attention due to their grandiosity, the Small Works Exhibition is here to paint a different picture – a miniature one! Artists from around the region and around the Commonwealth are invited to submit miniature and small artworks. Artworks in all media are represented, and the exhibition presents a wide range of styles, techniques, content, imagery and intent. Small two-dimensional works are required to be no larger than 80 square inches and small three dimensional works are required to be no larger than 10 inches on any side. Wonderful things do come in small packages – and they make amazing holiday gifts!

    Welcome to the third annual Winter Reading Challenge! We join hundreds of other schools and libraries across the United States as participants in this exciting event. We challenge you to read at least 12 books during the month the month of January and track those books here in Beanstack. We hope to meet our community-wide goal of 2,020 books read by our patrons by the end of January! One lucky reader will be selected to win a ticket-pack to the Virginia Air & Space Center!     What's cooler than being cool? Subzero science! Chill with us on Saturday to learn about the extreme cold. Did you know all snowflakes start in the same shape? Create your own and learn how each flake is formed and transformed before it hits the ground. Create a comet complete with a jet trail and learn how they form and travel through space. Do you wanna build a snowman? You'll be challenged to build the tallest snowman you can. The tricky part? Attempt to use the fewest materials possible. When it's cold outside, how do you stay warm? How do you think polar bears and penguins keep cozy when the temperatures drop way below zero? Find out in an unexpected way with our polar bear and penguin activity.
