Public Works - Collection Containers

1. Can I buy an extra garbage or recycling container for my house?: Yes you can. Residential customers can have two garbage and / or recycling containers. Business customers can have up to four garbage containers. The current price for an additional garbage or recycling container is $70.

2. Can I take the garbage and recycling containers with me when I move?: No, the garbage and recycling containers assigned to that property must stay there if you move.

3. Do I need to have a city-approved garbage or recycling container to receive city collection service?: Yes, all garbage and recycling must be inside a city-approved container to be collected. No extra bags of garbage or recycling items are taken.

4. How can I reach your 3-1-1 Customer Call Center?: If you are calling from the City of Hampton, simply dial 3-1-1 on your touch tone or rotary dial phone. From outside the City of Hampton, please dial (757) 727-8311. The call center is available from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.

5. If I move into a house and there is no recycling or garbage container there, how do I get one?: If you are renting the home, the landlord is responsible for supplying a city-approved recycling and garbage container to you. If you are buying the home, the city will issue one garbage and / or recycling container to the address.

6. What do I do if my garbage or recycling container is lost or stolen?: Lost or stolen garbage and recycling containers have to be replaced by the resident at their expense. Having your address on them will help deter someone from stealing them.

7. When can I put my garbage and recycling containers at the curb for collection?: All items for collection can be put curbside as early as 3 p.m. the day before your scheduled collection day. You will need to remove the containers by midnight on the following day of your collection to keep your neighborhood looking good.

8. Who owns the garbage and recycling containers at my house?: Any container issued at no charge and assigned to your address is the property of the City of Hampton.

9. Whom should I call to report damage to my container, problems with the placement of the container after collection, or to request a new, second, or replacement container?: Call the 3-1-1 Customer Call Center. If you are calling from the City of Hampton, simply dial 3-1-1 on your touch tone or rotary dial phone. From outside the City of Hampton, please dial (757) 727-8311. The call center is available from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week to assist you.

10. Why do I need to provide space between my garbage container, recycling container, and other items out for collection?: Each item is collected by a different vehicle so access is important. Also, the collection arm on the automated truck requires space to make the collection safely and not tip over other containers or damage your property.

11. Why do the arrows on the garbage and recycling containers need to be pointing to the street?: The automated collection truck cannot turn the container around as it picks it up. Dumping the container backwards can break or damage the lid.
